Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic condition where the body has difficulty regulating blood sugar (glucose) levels. This can happen either because the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin (a hormone that helps glucose enter cells for energy) or the body doesn’t use insulin effectively. As a result, glucose builds up in the bloodstream, leading to high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). Over time, this can lead to serious health problems like heart disease, nerve damage, kidney failure, and blindness.
Types of Diabetes :-
  • Type 1 Diabetes :- An autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks insulin-producing cells. Individuals with Type 1 require daily insulin.
  • Type 2 Diabetes :- The most common type, characterized by insulin resistance or insufficient insulin production.
  • Gestational Diabetes :- Occurs during pregnancy and typically resolves after birth, but increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later.
  • Prediabetes :- Blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet diagnostic of type 2 diabetes, serving as a precursor.
Symptoms :-
Diabetes symptoms vary, but common ones include increased thirst, frequent urination, increased hunger, fatigue, blurred vision, unexplained weight loss, slow-healing sores, and frequent infections.
Causes :-
Causes include insulin resistance (type 2), autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing cells (type 1), hormonal imbalances, pancreatic damage, and genetic mutations.
Diagnosis and Treatment :-
Diagnosis involves blood tests like fasting blood glucose, random blood sugar, and A1C tests. Treatment focuses on managing blood sugar and preventing complications through blood sugar monitoring , medication (insulin or oral), lifestyle changes (diet, exercise, weight loss), and regular checkups.
Living with Diabetes :-
Managing diabetes requires consistent effort but allows for a full and healthy life with proper care, support from healthcare teams, loved ones, and support groups.
