Katibasti Therapy

Kati Basti (also known as Kati Vasti) is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy for relieving lower back pain and stiffness. It involves retaining warm, medicated oil over the lower back area using a dough ring.

How it’s done :-

  1. Preparation: A patient lies face down. A ring-like structure made of black gram dough is formed around the lower back area. The size and shape of the ring are determined by the affected area.

  2. Filling with oil: Warm medicated oil is poured into the dough ring, filling the reservoir it creates on the lower back.

  3. Oil retention: The oil is retained for a specific duration, typically 30-45 minutes, allowing its therapeutic properties to penetrate the tissues. The warmth of the oil is maintained by replacing it with warm oil as needed.

  4. Post-treatment: After the oil is removed, a gentle massage and steam therapy may be performed

Benefits :-

  • Pain relief :- Kati Basti is effective in alleviating lower back pain, including chronic pain, sciatica, and muscle strain. The warm oil relaxes muscles and soothes inflamed tissues.
  • Reduced stiffness and improved flexibility :- It helps reduce stiffness and improves flexibility in the lower back, making movement easier.
  • Strengthens muscles and enhances blood flow :- The therapy strengthens muscles and connective tissues and increases blood flow to the lower back area, promoting quicker healing of muscle strains.
  • Effective for various back conditions :- It is beneficial for conditions like sciatica, lumbar spondylosis, herniated discs, and degenerative spine diseases.
It’s essential to consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before undergoing Kati Basti, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions or are pregnant. The therapy may not be suitable for everyone and has contraindications such as acute fever or infections, recent surgery or injury, and skin conditions in the lower back area.
